Southwest Refund Policy 2026: What Actually Applies
Southwest's refund policy for 2026 is a layered system: the DOT 2024 rule on top of Southwest's own Wanna Get Away vs Anytime vs Business Select fare rules. Here is what actually applies in each situation, and when you get cash vs LUV Vouchers.
Two Layers of Southwest Refund Rules
Southwest refund policy 2026 operates in two layers:
- 1
DOT 2024 rule (14 CFR 259.5): cash refund to original payment method on cancellations and significant delays (3+ hours domestic, 6+ hours international).
- 2
Southwest's fare-class rules: LUV Voucher or Travel Fund credit for voluntary changes, based on fare class.
DOT rules always apply regardless of fare class. Southwest cannot refuse cash refund on a Wanna Get Away fare for a cancelled flight. Fare class only affects voluntary-change rules, not airline-caused cancellation refunds.
Fare Class Voluntary Change Rules
- ›
Wanna Get Away (non-refundable basic fare): voluntary change or cancellation gets a LUV Voucher for the value paid, usable within 12 months. No cash refund unless the airline cancels.
- ›
Wanna Get Away Plus: similar to Wanna Get Away but with free same-day changes.
- ›
Anytime (fully refundable): voluntary change or cancellation gets cash refund to original payment method, no time limit.
- ›
Business Select: same as Anytime plus priority boarding and drink coupons.
Airline-Caused vs Voluntary Cancellation
The critical distinction:
- ›
Airline cancels your flight: DOT 2024 rule applies. Cash refund regardless of fare class.
- ›
Significant delay (3+ hours arrival): DOT 2024 rule applies. Cash refund or continue on rebooked flight.
- ›
You voluntarily cancel: fare class rules apply. Wanna Get Away gets LUV Voucher, Anytime gets cash.
- ›
Schedule change beyond acceptable limits: treated as cancellation; DOT rule applies.
- ›
Denied boarding: DOT 14 CFR 250 cash compensation formula applies, regardless of fare class.
LUV Voucher Mechanics
LUV Vouchers and Travel Funds work as follows:
- ›
LUV Voucher: travel credit tied to a specific passenger, usable within 12 months.
- ›
Travel Fund: flexible credit not tied to a specific flight, usable within 12 months.
- ›
Transferability: LUV Vouchers are non-transferable to other passengers. Travel Funds can sometimes be applied to any passenger on a booking you create.
- ›
Expiration: 12 months from issue date, rare extensions granted on request for specific documented reasons.
- ›
Cash conversion: generally not permitted for LUV Vouchers once issued, except for airline-caused cancellation situations where DOT rule overrides.
Schedule Changes
Southwest's schedule change policy: if Southwest changes your itinerary more than 90 minutes in either direction from original departure, you can:
- ›
Accept the new time and travel.
- ›
Rebook at no charge to any Southwest flight within 14 days of the original date.
- ›
Full refund to original payment method, regardless of fare class.
Southwest's 90-minute window is more generous than most carriers. Most airlines trigger the refund right at 2-hour changes for domestic. Southwest allows smaller schedule changes to trigger the right.
