United Airlines Lost Bag Claim: Process and Payout

A United lost bag claim follows DOT 14 CFR 254.4 ($3,800 cap) domestic or Montreal Convention (1,519 SDR ≈ $2,050) international. United's Star Alliance interline network is strong for recovery. Here is the 2026 process.

United Baggage Liability

  • DOT 14 CFR 254.4 domestic: $3,800 per passenger minimum liability.

  • Montreal Convention international: 1,519 SDR ≈ $2,050 USD.

  • United Contract of Carriage: matches DOT minimums.

  • Declared value: accepted at check-in for extra fee on eligible bags, typically $5/$100 of value.

The 21-Day Rule

  1. 1

Day 0: file PIR at airport.

  2. 2

Day 1 to 21: bag "delayed"; interim essentials claim.

  3. 3

Day 21: declare lost if not delivered.

  4. 4

Day 45 (DOT): United must respond.

  5. 5

2 years from flight (Montreal): final legal deadline.

What United Typically Pays

  • Interim essentials: $100 to $200 per day for up to 5 days.

  • Final lost-bag payout with full receipts: $1,000 to $2,500 typical.

  • Without receipts: $300 to $500.

  • At DOT cap: $3,800 with fully documented inventory, rare.

  • Baggage fee refund: automatic on lost bag.

  • Premier tier boost: sometimes slightly higher payouts for Premier 1K and Global Services.

Star Alliance Interline Recovery

United has strong interline agreements through Star Alliance (Lufthansa, ANA, Air Canada, SAS, LOT Polish, TAP, Turkish, Singapore, Egyptair, South African, and others). If your bag misconnects between Star Alliance carriers and United:

  • Bag tracking: Star Alliance shares tracking data; United usually has visibility.

  • Handoff protocol: established between Star Alliance carriers; faster recovery than at airlines with limited interline.

  • Bag delivery: United typically delivers recovered bags to your address.

  • Claim processing: may involve multiple carriers if the loss occurred in interline transfer.

Claim Process

  1. 1

    At airport: file PIR immediately.

  2. 2

    Screenshot PIR before leaving.

  3. 3

    Submit interim claim via united.com/baggage.

  4. 4

    Monitor tracker via United app.

  5. 5

At day 21: formal lost-bag claim with complete inventory.

  6. 6

Follow up day 30 if no response.

  7. 7

File DOT complaint day 45 if unresolved.

  8. 8

Parallel insurance claim for gap coverage.

Declared Value

United accepts declared value above DOT cap at check-in:

  • Rate: typically $5 per $100 of declared value.

  • Max per bag: $5,000 in practice.

  • Required for: cameras, jewelry, musical instruments, medical equipment, collectibles.

  • Form: baggage declaration at check-in counter.

  • Recovery: if lost, up to declared value (not cap).
