Credit Card Travel Insurance: What It Covers

Premium credit cards bundle trip delay, cancellation, interruption, rental car, and baggage insurance. Here is the coverage matrix for the top 8 cards in 2026 and which claims actually get paid.

The Top 8 Cards in 2026

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: $500 trip delay 6h, $10K trip cancel, $3K baggage.

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: $500 trip delay 12h, $10K trip cancel.

  • Amex Platinum: $500 trip delay 6h, $10K cancel, $2.5K baggage.

  • Amex Gold: limited; no trip delay.

  • Capital One Venture X: $500 trip delay 6h, $2K cancel.

  • Capital One Venture: no trip delay.

  • Citi Premier: $300 trip delay, secondary coverage.

Chase Sapphire Reserve is the gold standard for card-based travel insurance. Best combination of trip delay, cancellation, and baggage coverage.

Trip Delay Coverage

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: $500 per trip after 6+ hours. Secondary but pays first in most cases.

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: $500 per trip after 12+ hours.

  • Amex Platinum: $500 per trip after 6+ hours.

  • Venture X: $500 per trip after 6+ hours.

  • Citi Premier: $300 per ticket after 3+ hours (small cap).

Trip Cancellation and Interruption

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve/Preferred: $10,000 per trip, $20,000 per card. Covers covered-reason list.

  • Amex Platinum: $10,000 per trip.

  • Venture X: $2,000 per trip.

  • Most lower-tier cards: no cancellation coverage.

  • CFAR equivalent: no card offers CFAR. Use standalone policy.

Baggage Delay and Loss

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: $100/day for 5 days delay, $3,000 lost.

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: $100/day for 5 days, $3,000 lost.

  • Amex Platinum: $500 delay after 6 hours, $2,500 lost.

  • Venture X: $100/day for 3 days, $3,000 lost.

  • Others: varies, often limited.

Primary vs Secondary Coverage

Primary coverage pays first without requiring a prior claim elsewhere. Secondary pays only after other insurance (including travel insurance or airline comp) processes first. Reserve, Platinum, and Venture X are primary; most others are secondary. Primary is faster and less paperwork.
