How to Get a Refund from JetBlue Airways

JetBlue has a Customer Bill of Rights that automatically compensates for delays -- but it pays credits, not cash. Here is how to get your actual cash refund and Bill of Rights compensation.

JetBlue's Customer Bill of Rights and What It Covers

JetBlue operates a Customer Bill of Rights (CBoR) that goes beyond US DOT requirements. For controllable delays, JetBlue automatically issues credits to affected passengers on a tiered scale: $50 for a 1-2 hour delay, $100 for 2-3 hours, $150 for 3-4 hours, and $200 for delays of 4 hours or more (or overnight delays).

These credits are automatic -- you should receive them without filing a claim. However, credits are not a substitute for a cash refund. If JetBlue cancels your flight and you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a full cash refund to your original payment method under DOT rules, in addition to any CBoR credits.

JetBlue CBoR credits and DOT cash refunds are separate entitlements. The CBoR credit for your delay is not a refund. If JetBlue canceled your flight, you are owed your full ticket price back in cash.

    Explicitly request a refund to your original payment method, not JetBlue travel credit.

If JetBlue has not sent your Customer Bill of Rights credit for a controllable delay that happened, file that separately through the same help portal under 'Customer Bill of Rights'. Check whether the credit arrived in your TrueBlue account first -- JetBlue sometimes issues CBoR credits automatically without notice.

JetBlue-Specific Policies

  • CBoR delay compensation tiers: $50 (1-1:59h), $100 (2-2:59h), $150 (3-3:59h), $200 (4h+ or overnight). These are TrueBlue credits unless you explicitly request cash.

  • TrueBlue award tickets: If JetBlue cancels an award booking, the TrueBlue points must be restored to your account and any cash fees refunded.

  • Transatlantic JetBlue routes: If your disrupted JetBlue flight departed from London Gatwick or Amsterdam, EU261 or UK261 may apply. JetBlue operates transatlantic routes to those airports.

  • Mint class downgrade: If you were moved out of JetBlue Mint (business) class, request a prorated refund of the fare difference.

If JetBlue Denies or Ignores Your Refund

File a complaint with the DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division. JetBlue is required to respond. Include the confirmation code, flight date, disruption details, and the amount owed.
