Frontier Refund Policy 2026: What Actually Applies

Frontier refund policy 2026 overview: DOT federal rules override Frontier's restrictive contract of carriage in most cases. This guide explains what Frontier says, what the DOT says, and which one actually applies.

The Two Refund Regimes

Frontier's own refund policy (contract of carriage) and the federal DOT refund rule sometimes conflict. The DOT rule wins when they conflict. Understanding Frontier refund policy 2026 starts with knowing which rule applies to your situation.

When the DOT Rule Applies

  • Airline-caused cancellation. DOT rule: full cash refund.

  • Significant delay (3+ hours domestic, 6+ hours international). DOT rule: refund on request.

  • Schedule change resulting in 3+ hour arrival shift. DOT rule: refund on request.

  • Downgrade from paid cabin class. DOT rule: refund of the difference.

  • Class of service fails to deliver paid features. DOT rule: partial refund.

When Frontier's Policy Applies

For voluntary changes (you want to cancel or change the flight), Frontier's contract applies. Most Frontier fares are non-refundable for voluntary changes. Their "Works" and "Perks" bundles allow voluntary changes with reduced fees. The DOT rule does not override voluntary-change terms.

Know whose fault triggered the change. Airline-caused = DOT rule. Passenger-caused = Frontier's contract.

Ancillary Fee Refunds

Ancillary fees (seat selection, baggage, carry-on) refund differently. The DOT rule requires refund of unused ancillary services (if you paid for a seat on a cancelled flight, the seat fee refunds). Some Frontier ancillary fees are transferable to a rebooking rather than refunded.

Refund vs Travel Credit

Frontier defaults to travel credit for many cancellations. The DOT rule requires cash refund to original payment on request. Always explicitly request cash refund in writing and cite 14 CFR Part 259 when the airline tries to substitute a credit.

File Your Frontier Refund Request

The DOT rule is clearer than Frontier's contract. Check your flight and we file the refund using the federal rule as the basis. For the framework, see the denied boarding compensation guide.
