Finnair EU261 Claim Guide: Step by Step

Finnair EU261 claim guide: Finnair is the Finnish flag carrier with a major Asian route network via Helsinki. This guide covers filing, Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) escalation, and tactics for common Finnair denial patterns.

When Finnair Owes You EU261

Finnair is an EU-based flag carrier, so EU Regulation 261/2004 covers every flight departing from an EU or EEA airport and every flight to the EU operated by Finnair (including the long-haul Asian routes Helsinki-Tokyo, Helsinki-Seoul, Helsinki-Singapore). A Finnair EU261 claim triggers on a cancellation with less than 14 days notice, a denied boarding, or an arrival 3+ hours late at your final destination.

Finnair's Asian routes are EU261's most generous territory for long-haul. Helsinki-Seoul at over 7,800 km routinely pays €600 per passenger on 3-hour delays.

Finnair Compensation Amounts

  • Under 1,500 km: €250 (Helsinki to Stockholm, Tallinn, Riga).

  • 1,500 to 3,500 km within EU: €400 (Helsinki to Paris, Rome, Athens).

  • Over 3,500 km EU to non-EU: €600 (Helsinki to Tokyo, Seoul, Delhi, Bangkok).

For the broader EU261 rules, see the EU261 passenger rights pillar. For a parallel Nordic carrier, see SAS EU261 claim guide step by step.

Finnair's Claim Portal

File at finnair.com under Customer Care > Claims > Travel disruption. The form asks for booking reference, flight number, and a description of the disruption. Select cash payment by bank transfer. Submit and save the claim reference.

Common Finnair Denial Patterns

  1. 1

Extraordinary circumstances on technical faults. Finnair sometimes claims mechanical issues are extraordinary. ECJ case law limits this: only unforeseeable, external mechanical events qualify.

  2. 2

Russian airspace rerouting. Since 2022, flights rerouted around Russia due to airspace restrictions often delay. Finnair cites this as extraordinary, but only for specific flight dates.

  3. 3

Long-haul scheduling changes presented as minor schedule adjustments rather than cancellations. If the arrival is 3+ hours different, compensation still applies.

Escalating to Traficom

Finland's national enforcement body is Traficom. They handle EU261 escalations for flights departing Finland and for Finnair-operated flights to Finland. Escalation typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. Finnair follows Traficom findings in the vast majority of cases.

For parallel NEB processes, see klm EU261 claim guide step by step and austrian airlines EU261 claim guide step by step.

Article 9 Right to Care

Separately from cash compensation, Article 9 obligates Finnair to provide meals, refreshments, communication access, and hotel accommodation (with transport) during any delay of 2+ hours. Finnair generally provides care proactively at Helsinki and major European hubs. For US-arrival delays (e.g. Helsinki-JFK diverting), the airline's obligation still applies.

Timeline

  • Days 1 to 7: automated acknowledgment.

  • Days 7 to 30: first decision letter.

  • Days 30 to 60: bank transfer of approved compensation.

  • Days 60 to 150: Traficom escalation if denied.
